Summer is right around the corner and with the average temperature in Beaufort in June, July, and August in the upper 80s and close to 90, you’ll want to make sure your AC is working at peak performance.

A sweltering day in July is not the time to find out that your AC unit isn’t working. You should hire a professional HVAC company to service your unit in the spring and the fall, but as a homeowner, you can do some preventative maintenance on your own.

Keep reading for a maintenance checklist that will help you keep everything working properly in between visits by the professionals.

HVAC Maintenance Checklist

A certified HVAC tech will make sure everything is working properly and get your system ready for the winter and the summer, but in between, you can do some routine maintenance on your own.

1. Learn How the System Works

It’s important to learn how your HVAC system works. If you know a little about how it operates, you can do some troubleshooting on your own if you have any issues. It will also help you describe any issues to the pros if you have to call them out.

2. Check Your Air Filters

The air filter in your AC unit keeps dust and debris from accumulating and also filters out allergens. You should check your air filter monthly, especially in the summer when the AC is running constantly. The EPA recommends that you replace the filter at least every 90 days.

3. Clear the Area Surrounding the Furnace

Proper airflow is necessary for your heating equipment to work properly. If you have things stored around it, air flow is reduced and the unit has to work harder, which uses more energy.

You should leave six feet around your furnace or air handler to ensure proper airflow. Storing items too close could also be a fire hazard, especially if they are highly flammable.

4. Clear Registers and Vents

Make sure that all of your registers and vents are open and clear of dust, debris, and other items that could be blocking them. This will ensure the proper flow of air into your living space and help your HVAC system work more efficiently.

5. Clear Area Around AC Unit

Any debris around your AC unit should be cleared out. Branches, leaves, any trash that has blown in there, etc. This should all be cleared out. Just as with the areas surrounding the heating unit and the registers and vents, a clear area is necessary for everything to work properly.
