Don’t Waste Your Energy Beating the Heat!
Winter is over, which means that as the days warm up and the world begins to come alive again your heating is probably getting used less and less.
But now it’s time to turn your attention to what lies ahead of you: the hot, sticky, sweaty summer months. If you feel a sense of dread thinking about your energy bills this summer then consider taking these steps to help you keep them under control:
Make Use of Your Ceiling Fan
You are going to really appreciate your ceiling fans by the time summer gets hot. If you don’t have a fan in every room consider buying a few small ones and putting them in places you frequent.
Before you go to turn on your AC first do a check and see if your fans are on. If they aren’t then go ahead and turn them on, and give them some time to create a nice breeze first. You’ll be surprised at how nice it can feel on a hot day!
Keep Your Thermostat Away From TVs and Lamps
Okay so if you simply must turn on the AC you should make sure that your furniture is arranged correctly.
You read that right. You might want to rearrange your living room to make sure that lamps, TVs, and any other device that heats up is far away from your thermostat.
Because it can throw off the device and trick it into thinking it needs to increase power usage to make your home cooler. Don’t make this classic mistake!
Open Windows Are Your Friends
Open windows are great, especially when you can get a nice cross breeze going. Open windows in a room with a fan? Even better.
You are going to want to make sure any window that you open has a screen, however. You don’t want mosquitoes and other insects getting into your house!
Heat Reflectors Can Also Help
If it is an especially hot day consider using heat reflective material (which is what you put up against your car windshield to keep the sunlight from roasting the inside of your car) up against your windows.
This can give you a major sense of relief during the hottest hours of the day when the sunlight is beaming down on you, especially if you have large windows that let in a lot of light! Doing this can darken your rooms, which can make them feel cooler.
Cook on the Grill
You aren’t going to want to use your oven or stove on hot summer days! Try to use your outdoor cooking set up as much as possible, just to keep that heat out of the house where it will make the heat even more unbearable.
Make Sure Your AC Unit Works Properly
You can save more money in the long run by making sure that your AC unit is working the way it should be. You don’t want to be surprised by an extremely high bill and find out that something was leaking this whole time!
